Speaking Out When Everything Is on the Line
Our speaking events are designed to do more than just share stories; they are a powerful tool for raising awareness and equipping others to combat the dangers of cults. Through book readings and lectures, we bring our personal experiences to life, revealing the manipulative tactics used by cults to exert control—especially in the areas of spiritual, mental, financial, and sexual abuse. My goal, in particular, is to reach former members of The Potter’s House, helping them make sense of their past and find a path forward.
We’ve found that our message resonates with a wide range of people—former cult members, mental health professionals, and the general public. By tailoring our approach, we ensure that everyone walks away with a deeper understanding. Book readings and lectures are crafted for general audiences, providing a broad yet impactful overview, while our in-depth trainings and workshops dive into the complexities of cult psychology, designed specifically for those in the mental health field.
When we step in front of an audience, we’re not just recounting our experiences; we’re creating a space for learning and dialogue. Our lectures typically run for about three hours, where each of us—Israel van Dorsten, Jan van der Winden, and I—shares our journey within a carefully allotted timeframe, ensuring a well-rounded and comprehensive session. For those looking to dig even deeper, our full-day training sessions offer a thorough exploration of how cults operate and how survivors can be supported.
Engagement is at the heart of what we do. After our lectures, we open the floor to questions, giving the audience a chance to connect with us on a more personal level. This is followed by an informal meet-and-greet, where attendees can approach us individually, purchase our books, and have them signed. To further enhance the experience, we provide a BITE Model Analysis of The Potter’s House, strategically placed on every other chair before the event begins, offering attendees valuable insight even before the lecture starts.
The impact of our events speaks for itself. They have been fully booked within days, and the demand for our books has been overwhelming. Perhaps most rewarding are the personal encounters with former members who thank us for the work we’re doing—proof that our message is reaching those who need it most.
These events are a collaborative effort, made possible through Vrijhartig Training en Advies, the company Israel, Jan, and I founded together. Each of us brings our unique experiences to the table, creating a narrative that is both powerful and relatable.
As we look to the future, we’re planning another event in December, continuing with the format and content that has proven successful. While I find it challenging to stand in front of large groups and share my deepest trauma, I do so out of necessity. By speaking out, I hope to disrupt the cycle of manipulation and abuse perpetuated by The Potter’s House, ensuring that others don’t have to endure what I did.
Book Signings
At each of our events, the connection with the audience continues long after the lectures and discussions end. During the book signings, attendees have the opportunity to purchase a copy of Escaping the Potter’s House, which I’m happy to personally sign. If you already own a copy, feel free to bring it along—I’ll be glad to sign that as well. This is a special moment to not only receive a signed book but also to engage directly and briefly with the message behind it.
